The Complete Hail Damage Supplement Checklist for Roofing Contractors
By Kyle Hamrick · March 22, 2026
A complete hail damage supplement requires the right documentation, the right line items, and the right submission process. Most claims that underperform fail at one of these three points — not because the coverage wasn't there.
Use this checklist on every hail job. It covers what to gather before you write, every line item category to verify, and what a proper submission looks like.
Documentation to Gather Before Supplementing
Carrier's initial estimate (PDF or Xactimate file)
Inspection photos — all slopes, all elevations, close-up impact shots
Aerial measurement report (EagleView or equivalent)
Storm data report showing hail size and event date
Manufacturer specs for proposed replacement shingles
Local building code requirements for drip edge, ice/water, ventilation
Any prior supplement correspondence with the carrier
Roofing Line Items to Check on Every Claim
Starter strip — should be starter product, not cut shingles
High-profile ridge cap — verify carrier priced architectural cap, not 3-tab
Ice and water shield — verify full perimeter per local code, not minimal coverage
Synthetic underlayment — if current code requires it, it's recoverable
Drip edge — required on replacement; frequently missing from carrier estimates
Step flashing — at all wall intersections, chimneys, and protrusions
Pipe jacks and boots — replacement warranted on most full re-roofs
Continuous ridge vent or off-ridge vents — verify replacement included
Steep slope charge — verify correct pitch bracket was used
Renailing sheathing — required by code in many jurisdictions on re-roof
OSB replacement — audit actual damaged percentage vs. carrier cap
Additional Items Often Missed
Satellite dish — detach and reset labor
Power vent — remove and replace, not just disconnect
Dumpster upgrade — if debris volume exceeds basic haul-off allowance
Gutter replacement — per-LF carrier pricing vs. current market rate
Fascia board damage — check at all guttered areas
Permit fees — required in nearly every jurisdiction, almost always missing
Overhead and profit — warranted on jobs requiring GC coordination
Cap flashing at chimney — often listed as repair when replacement is warranted
Supplement Submission Checklist
Supplement written in Xactimate with current pricing
All missed items supported by photos
Code requirements cited with jurisdiction reference when applicable
Carrier notified in writing of supplement submission
Follow-up scheduled within 3-5 business days
How Many Items Should Be on a Typical Hail Supplement?
On a full-replacement hail claim for an average residential roof, you should expect 8 to 15 supplemental items on top of the carrier's initial scope. Cumulative value typically runs $2,000 to $8,000+ per claim depending on roof size, pitch, and accessories.
If your supplement has 2-3 items, you're probably leaving money on the table. If you're not sure what you're missing, send us the carrier estimate and we'll show you.
