Why Roof Insurance Supplements Get Denied — and How We Fix It

Most supplement rejections happen because the documentation is wrong, not because the line item isn't valid. Here's how we approach the claims carriers push back on.

Carrier says starter strip isn't required

We attach manufacturer installation instructions requiring starter on all eaves and rakes. IRC R905.2 requires installation per manufacturer — the carrier has no basis to deny.

Carrier denies O&P

We document all trades involved — roofing, drywall, painting, carpentry. When a GC coordinates multiple subcontractors, O&P is required by Xactimate guidelines and carrier agreements.

Carrier won't pay for step flashing R&R

IRC 908.5 prohibits reuse of metal flashing that had fasteners driven through it. After a full tear-off, step flashing must be replaced. We cite the code verbatim.

Carrier says their measurements are correct

We order an independent EagleView report and submit it as a counter-measurement. If the carrier's measurements are off, they're contractually required to reconcile to the independent report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roof insurance supplement?

A roof insurance supplement is a formal request to an insurance carrier to reconsider and increase the scope of a paid roofing claim. When a carrier's initial estimate misses line items — starter strip, ice and water shield, code-required drip edge, steep charges, O&P — a licensed supplement writer documents those omissions and submits them back to the carrier for additional payment. The approved additional amount is called the supplement.

How much can a roof insurance supplement recover?

On a typical residential roofing claim, a supplement recovers between $2,000 and $8,000 in additional approved amounts. Larger or more complex roofs — steep pitches, multiple stories, commercial properties — can see supplements of $15,000 or more. The amount depends on what the carrier missed in the original estimate and the specific line items required by code and manufacturer guidelines.

Who handles the roof insurance supplement process?

At The Estimate Company, all roof insurance supplements are written and managed by Kyle and Lexie Hamrick, former licensed independent insurance adjusters with 20+ years of experience. We covered the Southeast corridor working for 50+ carriers before transitioning to the supplement side. We know how adjusters think, how they price claims, and how to document a supplement that gets approved.

What does a roof insurance supplement include?

Our supplements include a full line-by-line scope review, Xactimate pricing for every missed or underpaid item, code citations (IRC, manufacturer requirements, local code), supporting documentation, and direct submission to the carrier. We handle follow-up communications with the desk adjuster and push back when carriers try to deny or reduce the supplement.

Is there a guarantee on roof insurance supplement results?

We offer a results guarantee: work with us on two claims per week for 12 months and add a minimum of six figures to your margins, or we write you a $5,000 check. No other supplement company in the country makes this offer.
